Miami for the Art Loving Tourist

Miami is mostly known for its beaches, Cuban influence, night life, and cuisine. However, that is not all there is

to it - Miami is a cultural melting pot that is home to a very diverse set of people, languages, food and art.

For those of you that gravitate towards art, Miami is definitely an art destination you would want to cross off

your checklist. The city is rich in contemporary and Latin influenced art which is evident in its buildings,

museums and of course – its hundreds of art galleries, and Art Deco attractions at South Beach.

Over the years, Miami has transformed into the quintessential art city as it is now home to several first class

resident companies. Both The Florida Grand Opera and the Miami City Ballet are well renowned for their

Balanchine Repertoire and both places are residents of the one and only Adrienne Arsht Center that has been in

business since 2006.

The now very popular Adrienne Arsht Center was designed by Cesar Pelli who is regarded as one of the most

creative and innovative old style architects in the world. The Center also hosts Broadway shows that travel

through Miami.

Another venue that can compete with the likes of the Adrienne Arsht Center is splendid Concert Hall that was

the brainchild of architect Frank Gehry, another master of the art form. It was completed in 2011 and is home to

a first class resident company also – The New World Symphony of Miami.

Contemporary art in the magic city of Miami

Contemporary art in Miami has grown by leaps and bounds ever since the very first Art Basel that occurred in

the year 2002. Some of the areas in and around Miami where an art seeking tourist is guaranteed to see some

mind blowing works of contemporary art are Midtown, Design District, and Wynwood Arts District.

Miami is now home to some avant-garde art galleries and international level private collections of art.

The streets of Miami are not short of art work themselves, for street art and graffiti admirers, there is tons to see

in the ever evolving world of Miami street art.

In December of every year, Miami hosts the Satellite Art Basel fairs.

The Modern art scene in Vice City

Miami is not lacking even when it comes to the expanding art industry of modern art. The city boasts of modern

art collections in the Art Deco District, New World Symphony, Miami Modern, Bacardi Building (located on

Biscayne Boulevard), the parking garage on Lincoln Road, and most importantly the Herzon & de Meuron

Perez Art Museum.

All of these places make Miami a top contender for the best repository of modern art in the entire world.

A fact that a lot of people are not aware of is that the now very popular South Beach was actually dead prior to

the eighties. Miami Art Deco architecture, planning and execution is solely responsible for its coming back to

life. For more on how to make the most of a Miami tour and the city’s vibrant arts and culture scene give us a
