Bicycle rentals in Miami allow you the best possible way to experience a city – at your own pace, able to decide what you want to see and where you want to go, unencumbered by the trappings of a four-wheeled vehicle that cages you in its frame. On a bike, you get to engage almost all of your senses with the city you are exploring – smell the odors and aromas, see the sights, hear the sounds, and, if you so wish, touch the ground with your foot or reach out your arm and touch surfaces with your hand. On a bike, it is easier to converse with people on the street and maneuver your way in and out of traffic. So if you’re in Miami and you know how to ride a bicycle, and if you are keen on exploring the city on a two-wheeler, head for one of the bicycle rentals. But before you do that, here are three things to consider.
Costs
Biking is an environmentally-conscious and healthy way of getting around the city. Conveniently, it is also one of the least expensive. Bike rentals typically cost around $10 an hour. You can save money by availing of promos where bike rentals go for about $20 for 24 hours, and $25 for 48 hours. You can even rent a bike for around $70 for the whole week.
Helmet Law
A national bicycle helmet law doesn’t exist; but in Miami-Dade County, they do take their helmet laws seriously. In the state of Florida, a bicycle is considered a vehicle and, as such, cyclists are governed by the same laws that apply to people who drive cars. This means that they must take the necessary safety precautions before venturing out on their bicycles.
In Florida, a bill passed in the late 90’s states that anyone under the age of 16 must have on a protective helmet before getting on a bicycle. In 2010, it was proposed that the age limit be raised to 18 but so far, no changes have been made to the original law. However, even if you are over the age of 16, err on the side of caution and put on a helmet before riding your bike. Remember that most bicycle rentals in Miami provide helmets and other protective gear upon request. Also remember that helmets must have passed national safety standards and must fit properly. Violators of state helmet laws may receive a citation and may be fined.
Bicycle Safety
Safety should always be your first consideration. When on a bike, wear proper protective gear such as a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads. These are available in almost all bicycle rentals in Miami. Be mindful of bike paths, traffic rules, dogs, and opening car doors. Avoid busy streets, signal your turns, wear red blinkies or a reflective vest so that you are extra visible, leave your MP3 player and cellphone at home, and choose wider streets whenever possible. Use the back streets and streets with slow-moving traffic. If you will be riding at night, make sure that your bike has a headlight.
